Most computer repair companies appear to look the other way. Ask them what their environmental policy is and they may tell you that they advocate recycling, but do they actively facilitate it? At Green
Wire we understand the dire importance of recycling and finding other non-traditional methods of dealing with our nations e-waste. Our strategy involves a 5-point system to ensure that you get the most use
out of your computer and if necessary, we'l help you recycle your computer or dispose of it in an eco-friendly manner. Just remember our our little anagram: V.A.L.U.E.
At Green Wire, we began to see a problem developing with so many computers & electronic devices popping up: What do you do with them when you're done using them? The sad fact is that most people throw them away. One comprehensive study conducted by the U.S. EPA (the Environmental Protection Agency) estimates that only 15-20% of electronics at the end of their useful life acutally get recycled†. In 2005 alone, a staggering estimate of 347 million devices reached the end of their useful life‡. By the EPA's own estimate, nearly 295 million (!!!) devices at the end of their life did not get recycled. It is important to note that some of these devices may have ended up in people's basement or attic. Some of them may have been passed on to other people who might be able to use them. But the fact remains that a good number of those ended up in land fills. What many people don't realize is that these discarded devices exact a much worse toll on our environment than just taking up landfill space. Many of them are manufactured using highly toxic materials such as lead and mercury. If they are left to sit in a land fill, these elements can leech out into the topsoil and in a worst case scenario, into our ground water and streams. The friendly staff and technicians of Green Wire Computer Service are standing by to help you with your computer problem. By choosing us, you are helping do your part to deal with our growing e-waste problem! †, ‡: Logue, Ann C. (2007, September/October). E-Scrap Collection Strategies. Scrap, 53-60 |
